On 25 November 2025, Professor Nuno Canas Mendes, Associate Professor at the University of Lisbon (ISCSP) and President of Orient Institute (Lisbon, Portugal), visited the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Department of Government and Public Administration, and the Institute for Global and Public Affairs at the University of Macau to deliver a lecture on the evolving relationship between China and Timor-Leste. The session focused particularly on the recent accession of Timor-Leste to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a development with significant regional and global implications. This visit formed part of the University of Macau’s research initiative under Project SRG2023-00026-FSS, for which Professor Mendes will serve as an external evaluator of the final output.

The lecture explored the economic, political, and diplomatic dimensions of China–Timor-Leste relations, offering students an interactive platform to engage with Professor Mendes’s expertise. Discussions centered on the opportunities and challenges arising from Timor-Leste’s integration into ASEAN, as well as its broader positioning within regional and global governance structures. Students were encouraged to reflect critically on Timor-Leste’s strategic choices and to articulate their perspectives on the country’s future trajectory.

Such academic exchanges underscore the University of Macau’s commitment to fostering international cooperation and advancing research on Portuguese-speaking countries, reinforcing its role as a hub for dialogue between China and the Lusophone world.

Professor Nuno Canas Mendes also had the opportunity to engage in a substantive exchange of views with Professor Pan Wei, Director of the Institute for Global and Public Affairs at the University of Macau. Their discussion focused on the evolving relations between China and Portuguese-speaking countries and examined the strategic role of Macau as an economic and cultural platform within this context. The conversation highlighted Macau’s unique position as a bridge facilitating dialogue, trade, and cooperation between China and the Lusophone world, reinforcing its relevance in both regional and global governance frameworks.
