Rita Tiwaa Nyamekye, originally from Ghana, and a Master’s student in the “International Relations and Public Policy” programme at the University of Macau, successfully defended her research project on 9 May 2025. Her work, titled “The Impact of Women in International Peace and Security: A Case Study of Ghanaian Military Women in Peacekeeping Operations”, was awarded an “Excellent” grade for its academic rigour and originality, and for helping to elevate the visibility of African women in international peacekeeping.
Nyamekye’s research, supervised by Professor Kaian Lam and examined by Professor Francisco Leandro, considered the unique contributions and challenges faced by Ghanaian female peacekeepers in United Nations missions.
Through Qualtrics questionnaires, WhatsApp interviews and visual exercises with military women, she captured firsthand perspectives on women’s evolving roles in conflict resolution. The study employed NVivo to analyze qualitative data, using inductive coding to identify key themes aligned with its objectives.
The research accounted for how Ghanaian military women play a pivotal role in protecting civilians, particularly survivors of gender-based violence, by building trust and employing empathetic engagement. Nyamekye’s findings underscored the importance of women for achieving global peacekeeping goals.
