Macau, 06 NOV 2025 – The Institute for Global and Public Affairs (IGPA) played a pivotal role in supporting a landmark seminar at the University of Macau, celebrating the centenary of Amílcar Cabral and the 50th anniversary of independence for Portuguese-speaking countries. The event was part of the Portuguese-speaking Series 2025 and exemplified IGPA’s mission to foster interdisciplinary engagement across Lusophone communities.
Organized in collaboration with the Department of Portuguese (Faculty of Arts and Humanities) and the Department of Governance and Public Administration (Faculty of Social Sciences), the full-day seminar brought together scholars and students to reflect on Cabral’s enduring legacy in literature, leadership, and international politics.
The opening ceremony, led by Vice Rector Professor Rui Martins and Professor Yonghong Wu, highlighted the University’s commitment to global governance and cultural dialogue. IGPA’s support was instrumental in curating a program that bridged academic research with policy relevance, reinforcing Macau’s role as a platform for Lusophone exchange.
The seminar featured two thematic sessions:
- “Amílcar Cabral as a Revolutionary Poet”
- “Amílcar Cabral as an International Political Figure”
Several academic presentations were delivered by scholars from Macau SAR, China, Mozambique, Cabo Verde, Brazil, and Portugal, covering topics from poetry and language to political economy and regional leadership. A special session included bilingual readings and analysis of Cabral’s poetry in Portuguese and Chinese.
“Amílcar Cabral’s ideas remain a beacon for understanding leadership and cultural identity in the Global South,” said Vice Rector Rui Martins.
“This seminar reflects IGPA’s commitment to advancing research and dialogue among Portuguese-speaking countries.”
