On 13th March 2026, a group of students from the University of Macau, led by Professor Francisco José Leandro, participated in an enlightening field visit to the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries (Forum Macau). The visit aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the nine Portuguese-speaking countries and their dynamic relationships with China, while also exploring the role of Macau as a unique cultural and economic platform.
Upon arrival, the students were warmly received by Forum Macau’s briefing officers, who provided a comprehensive overview of the Forum’s history, objectives, and key achievements since its establishment in 2003. The students listened attentively as the guides explained how the Forum facilitates multilateral cooperation in trade, investment, culture, and human resources development between China and the PSCs.
The students showed great interest in the diverse cultural and economic profiles of the PSCs, ranging from Angola and Brazil to Cabo Verde and Timor-Leste. They were particularly fascinated by the role of the Portuguese language as a bridge connecting such a geographically dispersed yet culturally coherent community.
During the visit, Professor Leandro invited several representatives from PSC delegations to speak directly with the students. The representatives shared insights into their countries’ development priorities, investment climates, and cultural specificities. The students eagerly engaged in a lively Q&A session, asking thoughtful questions about topics such as youth employment, digital transformation, and sustainable development in the PSCs.
“This visit has opened my eyes to the complexity and richness of the PSC world. I never realized how much history and economic potential connects China to these countries, and how Macau plays such a pivotal role,” said one student participant.
Professor Leandro commented, “Field visits like this are essential for bridging classroom theory with real-world diplomacy and cooperation. It is through direct exposure that students truly grasp the meaning of cultural empathy and international partnership.”
The students left Forum Macau with a deeper appreciation of the synergies between culture and economics, and a clearer vision of how they might contribute to China–PSC relations in the future.
